What Are You Doing This Summer?

I love all those "summer bucket lists" that pop up on Pinterest this time of year, so this year I created my own list . . .

While I was making my list, I challenged myself not to use the same verb more than once . . . and that's when it occurred to me that this is a perfect activity for your summer-school students or your own kiddos!

Can they make their own list (computer-generated or hand-drawn and decorated!) without using any nouns or verbs more than once?!? What a fun way to sneak in a little "educational" fun during the lazy, hazy (sometimes crazy!) days of summer!

So . . . what are you doing this summer?

Don't Miss the Freebies!

It's been 11 weeks since I started this blog . . . I know that because I have 11 freebies posted on my 'Extras' page!

If you haven't checked out that page, don't miss out . . . I post one freebie every Friday from a variety of TpT sellers! I try to feature ELA-related products or products that will help you create your own projects, such as digital papers, clipart, frames, and borders.

This week features a sweet Fourth of July Treat Box from Carol Martinez -- one of my favorite TpT colleagues! Go to the 'Extras' page and click on Carol's product for a perfect star-spangled project for the kiddos!

Bubblegum and Baseballs and Boomerangs, Oh My!

Do you have one of those ultra-curious kids who is always asking, "How'd they do that?"

Do you ever wonder how every day objects such as bowling balls, buttons, boxes, and bags are made?

Ever stop to wonder how tofu, hummus, or Swiss cheese are produced?

Thinking about a new and unique bell ringer or warm-up you can incorporate in your classes next school year?

Check out my newest Pinterest board filled with more than 200 short videos about every day foods and objects and how they are made! There are videos here to engage a variety of interests, from foodies to fashionistas, architects to athletes, and musicians to mechanics!

Use these videos to keep your own children engaged over the summer, or use them in your class to prompt creative writing, drawing, or art journaling (how would you make your ideal toy/pizza/ instrument/sandwich/video game?) These videos can also be used to inspire learners to research how other everyday objects are made, or to interest kids in creating their own "How It's Made" videos! So many uses . . . so little time!

"The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton: Perfect for Summer!

Do you remember some of your favorite reads when you were a teen? Many of my students gush over "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton! Even my most reluctant readers claim it's their favorite book. Perhaps it's because S.E. Hinton was 16 years old when she wrote this story . . . there's just something about Ponyboy's voice that grabs my students' attention and leaves them wanting to "read ahead" -- a teacher's dream!

Teaching summer school? "The Outsiders" is a perfect summer school unit! Students love the story, they will be engaged, and the planning is already done for you! I have a complete three-week unit on "The Outsiders" to get both you and your students through summer school while leaving you more time for YOUR summer! Here's a peek into the product . . .

"The Outsiders" 3-Week Unit Plan

This unit includes 15 step-by-step lessons:

Student worksheets and graphic organizers prompt careful reading, critical analysis, connections, and thoughtful, meaningful responses to the story:

Poetry analysis fosters analytic and critical skills and helps you integrate the study of poetry into this unit:

Fun and engaging activities, such as this "Are You Ready to Rumble?" relay race capture your students' attention and make this unit relevant to their world:
Answer Keys, Learning Objectives, Teaching Tips, and Common Core State Standards are all included so you can teach an academically rigorous unit this summer while spending less time prepping and more time enjoying the summer activities you love!

These plans also include several opportunities for writing, all of which prepare students for meaningful class discussions about the themes of exclusion vs. inclusion, equality vs. inequality, and tolerance vs. acceptance . . . I've always found my more reluctant readers to be more engaged in critical discussions within the context of a novel to which they can relate, such as "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton.

Of course, if you're not teaching summer school, this is a great unit to start your year off with a bang! Don't take my word for it . . . here's what other teachers say about this unit:
